We heard good things from the locals and decided to give the Belfry a try, and it was a great choice. We were seated at a booth near the bar and it was a bit noisy. If you have hearing issues, you may want to ask for a table in the back side of the restaurant. It was Monday, which is apparently sushi night this summer. My boyfriend is not a sushi fan, so we stuck to the pub menu on the blackboard. However, I must say some of the sushi I saw going to other tables had me incredibly jealous and impressed. I grew up eating sushi at authentic Japanese restaurants in California back in the 80s, and explored some very fine sushi restaurants while I lived in NYC, but this place looked like it could hold up a candle to the best of what I have had before - that is, if it tasted as good as it looked. We had some mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and it was okay. Nothing amazing, but they did appear to be homemade and not from frozen. My boyfriend chose the chicken souvlaki (a smaller plate) while I had the shrimp scampi on pasta. He said his souvlaki was good but left him wanting more. My dish was a bit light on the shrimp, but they were perfectly cooked and the pasta was al dente and evenly coated in the butter and garlic sauce. It was very satisfying, though i figured I could make the same dish at home for about 1/5th the menu price. The service was extremely friendly and the hostess was very gracious. We felt like we were treated as regulars even though this was our first visit. Our one regret - we had already had ice cream that day and so we chose to forego the desserts. But, oh boy, they were enticing. Save room!

My husband & I went here for our date night. The place was packed inside and out. We ordered some appetizers, mozzarella sticks & chicken wings, both super yummy. My husband tried the List Nation Craft Beer, he liked it. We shared meatloaf and chicken pesto sandwich. It was yummy. We didn't do dessert, but we will come back for another date.

Typical small town vermont pub. The food was excellent. We started with the maple wings and they were very good, not too sweet with syrup. The side salads were fresh and just the right size. They also brought us s bread basket with plenty of bread for the four of us. I had the smothered steak ( brown gravy with mushrooms & onions). The steak was cooked perfectly, and very tender, no fat to cut away. My dinner companions ate the fisherman's platter and they loved it. We shared the Maple Cream pie and it was mixed reviews. I loved it but 2 of the other diners thought it was too sweet. The service could have been a little more attentive but no major complaints there. I would eat here again.

Once again the Belfry gets the job done in a satisfying way. Tall G&Ts - always a good thing. Special blackened 14oz sirloin was cooked to my requested temperature and was a better steak than I expected. French onion soup was average. The no reservations policy makes for some uncomfortable pre-dinner jockeying around bar area, but once you have some real estate, the service makes up for the wait. We make an annual Jay Peak trip and will return both tonight and next year. Keep up the good work.

Great food, great ambiance and good service. Choose the specials on the blackboard over the menu - not that the menu's not great. It's been in Montgomery Center for 24 years and like the restaurants, bed and breakfasts and shops in Montgomery Center, it's worth a 7-minute drive off the Disneyland-like Jay Peak ski resort to get a taste of REAL Vermont!

Nice selection on menu. Whole family was happy. The food was good and the service was too. A great alternative to the choices at Jay Peak.

We had a great dinner at the Belfry -- started with the garlic shrimp appetizer, then pork chops, baked scallops, fish fry and numerous pasta dishes. The deserts were fantastic -- key lime pie and apple crisps with vanilla ice cream. Cool place with a great bar and outdoor seating with mountain views.

8 of us came in and everyone was happy with their dinner. I had the trout almandine. The fish was perfectly tender but flavor was just a little bland. It needed a little something something. Not sure what but something to bring the almond flavor out. For desert I had the brownie sunday. It is by far the best brownie sunday I ever had!!!!!!!! (and i eat a lot of brownie sundays). Brownie was hot and moist and choclatee delicious. Others had the mousse and it was also stellar. 10 stars for desert alone!

Trout river beer on tap, great skiing-induced-hunger satisfying burgers actually cooked to order, blackened salmon that is very good and flakey, fries from real potatoes. There are sooo many good things to like about this place starting with the excellent food, warm and cozy feel, and the friendly service who always seem to be genuinely interested in real conversation and how your day was (instead of empty smiles looking for tips like so many places). When in the North Country, it's my favorite for apres-anything grub and beers.

Well, the good first: it's got character. The service was nice and friendly. It *could* be an awesome ski-town bar. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre at best. I had the French Onion Soup (skip), the cheeseburger (meh), and the brownie sundae which people have raved about. Where are you from that this brownie sundae is the best you've had? Go back to Canada and stuff you face with Poutine. Seriously, it was just OK. Nothing about it was outstanding (fudge, ice cream, brownie). I ate it all - don't get me wrong. I belong to the clean plate club and it was all edible. The beer selection was OK. Again, the service was good. So no complaints there. I just didn't care for the food. Too bad! Jay Village Inn, while more expensive, is the better choice if you want a good meal.

Solid local spot with a good beer selection, great food, timely service, and an all around good vibe. Highly recommended if you don't want to overpay for eating at the resort, and enjoy some solid food.

We went here for dinner after a day of skiing at Jay Peak. The food was excellent.we had two excellent pasta dishes and my daughter had a very tasty steak. The portions were good size. The service was friendly. It was an excellent dinner for a small Vermont town. We definitely will come back next time we are in Jay.

Being a lover of great food and having spent the last 15 years living in San Francisco and Boston, I have been able to enjoy some amazing restaurants. The Belfry consistently hold it's own and has never disappointed us. Whenever we are vacationing in the area we make it a point to stop in for a meal or two. Excellent food, a cozy environment, and friendly, laid back staff.

We drive over the hill from Troy whenever we have a chance, food is fantastic, prices reasonable and the locals at the bar are friendly! The specials board is extensive and everything is great! Don't miss the steaks and if they have chicle pram lasagna, go for it! They have wines that even snobs like, and the tap beers always include Switchback! Enjoy!

The Belfry is the spot. Awesome atmosphere, friendly service, and fantastic food. Whether you want to cozy up to the bar for a few pints or sit down for an amazing maple glazed pork chop (best ever!), you'll enjoy your time spent at this wonderful place that exudes character and authenticity each and every night. I'm stingy with my stars and while this is excellent tavern fare, not exquisite cuisine, the atmosphere and people that make the Belfry what it is earn all 5 stars.

This place is fantastic.the service is great and they make the best blackened chicken in the world. They do not take reservations however so you may have to wait a bit. It's worth the wait

Led down the primrose path by good reviews. Entering through a narrow hallway with the lavatories gave us pause. Inside the bar was quaint so we took a table. All the good offerings are on the blackboard by the bar, waitresses couldn't possibly be expected to know them. Started with an excellent appetizer (smoked trout bruschetta) and was pleasantly surprised by quality of the Gimlet made with fresh-squeezed lime juice. After that, crash. The A/C was out and the meal took an age to arrive; line cooks clearly overwhelmed, we overheard at the next table when the entire party was finished eating and one man's meal finally arrived. Both our steaks were ordered CPR-rare but hers was med-rare and mine medium-well, must have sat under a heat lamp in the chaos. Sitting with a raucous crowd of motorcyclists in stifling heat waiting for our steaks to be overcooked was really not what we had expected. Wine list was minimal but there was one adequate bottle of Rhone to save us.

The Belfry is your classic homey pub with wood, warm lighting, local farming knicknacks sprinkled about the place, giving it character without kitsch. It used to be an old schoolhouse. The sign outside says open 4 'till...according to some livelier night owl friends of mine report. On rowdier nights they've seen locals leaning over the counter to pour themselves a little more beer with the bar tender giving them a friendly warning shot. The bar section is small and they don't take reservations, but the service efficient and friendly and if it gets crowded folks remain friendly despite the lack of a waiting area. The Belfry serves up basic american pub/bistro fare that is taken up a notch when you look at the blackboard full of specials. I've been going there for a number of years and many of the specials like the pork chop with cider glaze or the scallops with leeks and red peppers seem more like staples, but I'm not really complaining as I don't get there often enough to need a lot of menu rotation. For dessert, I totally recommend the maple cream pie - it is awesome - local dish that makes the New England maple syrup industry shine. Maple syrup - its not just for pancakes and this recipe takes the cake so to speak.
